Federal authorities arrested 21 people following a large drug bust throughout three North Carolina universities. Both current and former students from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Duke University and Appalachian State University were arrested on Thursday.
Authorities said that the defendants were accused of distributing more than $1.5 million worth of drugs to other students, often through fraternities.
“This conspiracy moved thousands of pounds of marijuana over the course of several years,” U.S. attorney Matthew Martin explained. He went on to add, “this is a large drug network and supply chain fueling a drug culture at fraternities and within these universities and towns.”

According to authorities, the investigation launched back in 2018 with one of the primary suppliers pleading guilty and landing 73 months in prison.
“We’ve uncovered this, federal charges are pending investigations ongoing. We cannot let this culture continue,” Martin said. “We cannot let the drugs coming in take our children.”
In the meantime, officials at UNC and Appalachian State ensured that the universities will cooperate with authorities throughout the investigation.
